Conservation volunteers news

Helping us out with conservation work is usually pretty varied, but at this time of year we need more volunteers to help us with ponds, ponds and more ponds! We can only work on ponds during the autumn and winter months. They are being ‘used’ by wildlife for the rest of the year – the easiest to spot are newts, frogs and toads.

Ponds are precious these days and many have disappeared due to lack of water, or silted-up with run off from the roads. Happily, because of climate change our remaining ponds are likely to fill up with water again and be back providing a healthy habitat.

Later in the year we’ll be at schools to help them make their wildlife habitat areas usable as an ‘extra classroom’. We’ll also be in the woods working with the Forestry Commission, including pulling out birch saplings to enable heather to re-grow.
