Cycling This page includes details about forthcoming rides and the latest news from the cycling group. Rides are open to both Society members and non-members. All riders ride at their own risk and should be 14 years or older unless accompanied by an adult. Bring your own drink for roadside stops. It is strongly recommended that all riders wear a helmet for all rides and carry their own first aid kit. Enquiries about the rides should be directed to the ride leader; telephone numbers given below.
We hit the Highs and Lows in the December Issue of the Chiltern News with our first ever photo on the front cover and a letter on the complaints page condemning all cyclists. We hope that you enjoyed the picture on the front page, and whilst we cannot speak for all cyclists, we are, and will continue to be courteous to all other users of roads and bridleways etc. We enjoy a friendly exchange and a smile with the walkers and horse riders and other cyclists and we nearly always get one. Its not so easy to smile at a motorist but we wave a thank you to them and they wave back a thank you to us in the lanes where cooperation is essential. As many of us are Walk Leaders and motorists too we are well aware of all these considerations. The Tuesday Group continues to thrive and is so well established now that your turn to lead comes round only occasionally, this month there was the highlight of the Christmas Lunch. This used to be in full fancy dress with the bikes decorated too. But this year only a few dressed them selves and their bikes up for the ride. This may have been due to the latest kitty arrangements which did not leave a surplus to buy a bottle of Champagne for the best dressed rider and bike. The Thursday Group is still establishing itself and your turn to lead comes round more frequently, the rides of both groups have been very good this autumn. The Chiltern Conservation Board proposes to establish a Chiltern Cycle Way, a 200km route around the Chilterns, we have agreed to co-operate with the Cycling Tourist Club in checking routes and facilites. It will be based on a road route with an alternative off road route, so that the rider can appreciate the best of the countryside quietly and safely, there will be half day and day circuits too. We have already started checking some existing routes which may be included in the final ones. Bikes for Sustrans We can always do with more bikes and if you have a reasonably modern adult bicycle you no longer need, please do let Jeremy know on 07836 208 752 or Chris on 01525 221 053.
