SEPTEMBER 2007

THANKS to Pam George, our Walks Organiser.

There is a constant demand for new walks organizers and it would be very helpful if more volunteers stepped forward. You only need to know your area – please come forward if you are interested.

JUNE 2007

SIMPLY WALK… Simply Walk was launched in March 2002 to encourage sedentary people to take more exercise by providing a simple and free means of doing so: a programme of walks led by trained volunteer walk leaders.
The scheme seeks to improve health, both physically and mentally as well as improving community spirit and involvement. This is evident in the way walkers have become motivated to raise money for the Society's Donate a Gate scheme, providing more stile-free routes and access for all. (See Chiltern News 184 – June 2007.) For more information about the walks please contact Fiona Broadbent 01494 475367.

New signs… If you are out walking, cycling, riding or even driving you may notice a variety of new signs, such as Public Highway, Other Routes with Public Access and Restricted Byway signs. Signs to indicate entry to Statutory Open Access Land have also been appearing. These are circular showing a person walking in a valley between two hills – with a similar sign with a bar indicating the end of open access land (there is quite a lot of open access land in the Chilterns and all the recently published Ordnance Survey Explorer maps show this).

Health Walks Bucks County Council is keen to promote the concept of Health Walks but one problem is in getting leaders to run them. This is another way in which Society members can help. The walks are intended to be fairly short and to encourage previous non-walkers to join in. Again, please get in touch if you think you can help

And, looking ahead… Summer Event – Marlow Group visit to Blewbury Manor Gardens, Didcot – Friday 29 June 2007 – further details from Dave Howarth 01494 488570.

Did you know that the Marlow Group is the only remaining Local Members' Group. If you would like to form a local group in your area to organise similar events, please contact the Society office. Equally, if you can offer help to the Marlow Group, please contact Dave Howarth.
