The guide is John Fitzgerald and we meet at 10.30am at the Hill Road car park, near the Carriers Arms (OS ref. SU 691944) MEETINGS Our next indoor meeting will be held at 10.30am on Saturday, 25 October for the PhotoGroup's AGM, followed by some visual entertainment. As usual, the venue is The Lounge, Amersham Community Centre and all Chiltern Society members are welcome. For the first meeting of the year at the Amersham Community Centre, Edna Sansom gave two illustrated talks. The first described the Amersham Martyrs, or Lollards, who were burned at the stake between 1506 and 1521. These religious dissenters are remembered every year at the end of summer by people dressed in period clothing. Edna's second talk showed a photographic record of the relatively unknown River Chess and its tributaries, with views around Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Chenies and Latimer. At our second meeting on Saturday, 1 March Tim Abell - a member of the Amersham Photographic Society - gave an illustrated talk 'Around the World in 80 minutes'. He also discussed his techniques and choice of camera equipment. PRESS CLIPPINGS AND ARCHIVE NEWS The PhotoGroup's visit to Cookham late last year provided an interesting photographic record of the town (see the PhotoGroups website: www.chilternphoto.org.uk). Media interest in the photographs and their archival context included a page in the 'Bucks Free Press' Freetime section, while a selection of pictures appeared on BBC Radio Berkshire's 'Berkshire in Pictures' website. 'Chilterns & Berkshire Life' a glossy lifestyle magazine, devoted a double-page spread in the April issue to a selection of Cookham pictures. A news item with two photographs from John Harrison's Old Beaconsfield photo project appeared in the 'Bucks Free Press'. John's 60 photos highlighted why the old town remains a real showcase for Chiltern vernacular buildings and Georgian elegance. The pictures can be seen on the group's website and are accompanied by detailed captions from Marian Miller of the Chiltern Society's Historic Buildings and Landscapes Group. A local school recently requested more pictures of High Wycombe, which prompted Michael Bowker to take the 16 photos they wanted. They have also been added to the original High Wycombe Trail channel. Have a look at an intriguing riddle on a stone in the River Wye and Michael’s other pictures at the following link: www.chilternphoto.org.uk/introduction/photogroup/locations/high_wycombe/index.htm Details of the PhotoGroup's activities, and photographic records of Chiltern locations, are found on its website (opens an additional browser window), or phone Guy Patterson on 01442 866491. |
