Ewelme Watercress Beds Nature Reserve This 6.5 acre (2.5 hectare) site was purchased by the Chiltern Society in November 2000. The historic fabric of the watercress beds has been restored by volunteers and the aims are now to manage the site for its heritage, wildlife and landscape value. A new Management Plan is in draft and you are invited to comment on it (see link to local web site below). Along with the many varieties of animals, about 80 species of birds have been recorded at the site and more than 20 species of butterflies. Elimination of mink, which badly affected the water vole population, has seen their welcome return. A modern Visitor Centre displays information about the wildlife and the history and restoration of the site. On Open Days a 1965 video shows the commercial growing of watercress at Ewelme. Opening times Open Days 2pm-5pm on the first Sunday of every month, April to October. During November to March there are Guided Walks starting at 10.30am. Refreshments available. Regrettably, we cannot sell the watercress grown here because water from the nearby road drains into the stream, so the water quality does not meet the necessary standards.
