Chiltern Open Air Museum Vernacular buildings – the houses and workplaces of past generations – are disappearing every day. The pressures are particularly great in the Chilterns, on London's doorstep. Chiltern Open Air Museum preserves and interprets the built heritage of the Chilterns. The Museum was founded in 1976 with the help of The Chiltern Society, its aim is to rescue threatened buildings, which are typical of the region, and re-erect them on a forty-five acre site of natural park, meadow and woodland, thus saving a variety of interesting structures which would otherwise be lost.
