Welcome to the home page of the Chiltern Society Planning Group
It seems that the threat to the Chilterns will never go away. The demands for new housing, for commercial developments, for increased leisure pursuits – all drawn by the attractive environment of the area – are ongoing, real and require a response.
When the above demands are added to new proposals for, or improvements to, the road, rail and air transportation network through the area, it clearly serves to demonstrate the extent of the pressures that are being faced by the highly valued Chilterns countryside and its settlements, comprising a whole range of delightful towns and villages.
One of the primary aims of the Planning Group is to seek to firmly resist, through the town planning process, the worst excesses of the development industry wherever it can; while at the same time taking the opportunity to promote high standards of town and country planning and architecture when schemes of merit are submitted for consideration to the many local authorities throughout the Chilterns area.
A further role of the group is to stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of the Chiltern Hills.
What we do
- Monitoring and responding to planning applications throughout the Chilterns but especially those affecting the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Green Belt and open countryside
- Acting as respected consultants to Local Authorities regarding emerging local (and other) planning documents that might impact on, or affect the future development of the Chilterns area
- Examining and responding to draft Government guidance documents and other consultations
- Representing the Society at Public Inquiries, Hearings and Examinations in Public.
Under the Planning Group Chairman the Planning Team consists of a number of Area Planning Coordinators (APCs) based on the existing Borough/District Council boundaries. The APCs each oversee a team of Planning Field Officers (PFOs) and Planning Assistants. The APCs and PFOs are responsible for covering all parishes within any given Borough and/or District area throughout the Chilterns. We also have qualified and experienced Advisors covering special topics (e.g. aviation).
A diagram of the Planning Group's organisational structure can be seen here.
The Chiltern Society Directory includes all contact information for its Planning Group. Following the link above will take you to the Planning Group section of the Directory in this website.
In addition we have a Planning Team Administrator and we are just beginning to pull together an admin and communication team around our lead administrator, especially as the demands for e-communication/web site development, etc., are becoming even more apparent.
Although each planning application must be dealt with by the local planning authorities on its own merits, the Planning Group have developed a number of Planning Guidance Statements to endeavour to ensure a consistent approach for APCs/PFOs in responding to planning applications and emerging guidance/local plan documents. See Glossary of Terms used in Planning for more information.
